If you’ve ever climbed in east Alabama, chances are you’ve been impacted by the Machen family. Carrie Machen, owner of Gadrock and SCC advocate, has played a massive role in introducing the Gadsden community to the sport.

How did you start climbing?

“I started climbing because I opened GadRock climbing gym in Gadsden, AL and figured it was past time to study the sport and learn the movement required to climb confidently. I had previously tried climbing a bit and ensured my children learned to climb, but I had never personally focused on it until I opened the gym.”

“I opened GadRock so my kids would have a gym to train in and so the climbing community in our area would have a space to congregate and create lifelong friendships. I have met some of the greatest humans because I took a chance and opened a climbing gym.”

Gadrock is a pillar of Gadsden, Alabama, and it all started because Carrie decided to take a chance. The well-loved “microgym” as it’s called has been an invaluable resource for the community at large.

What is your favorite southeastern climbing area?

“My favorite southeastern climbing area is hands down Hospital Boulders. It feels like home. I have the best memories with the most amazing people there. For me, climbing is more about the people around me than about myself. I am happiest coaching, encouraging or just watching others succeed at their project. Hospital is my favorite because it is where I have spent the most time, met the most people, touched the most rock and had the most positive experiences.”

Hospital Boulders is a special place to the SCC, and its relationship with Gadrock goes hand in hand. Just a short drive away, Gadrock’s slogan of “Train here, explore there” encourages visitors to engage with the outdoors, which often makes Hospital Boulders the proving ground for those who are ready to take their gym skills out to the crag for the first time.

How has the SCC specifically impacted your relationship with climbing?

“I am so thankful for the SCC’s mission to preserve climbing today and for future generations. That mission has opened up access for me to experience community and inspired me to build an indoor facility as an extension of the amazing outdoor areas in the Southeast.”

Our mission to preserve climbing has often brought other people into the fray with us, and we’re grateful for Carrie’s support as we continue growing our available areas and volunteer network.

What impact does climbing have on your life?

“Climbing’s biggest impact on my life has been the people I have gotten to know through the sport. I also deeply appreciate the continuous relationship with failure it facilitates.”

Climbing is of course a community endeavor, but it can also be a learning experience.

What’s your favorite thing about climbing?

“I love introducing climbing to people and I have found a lot of joy in coaching. My favorite climbs have been the ones I have watched my team kids tick off their lists.”

With its focus on training and empowerment for the youth, Gadrock proves itself to be a well-rounded force for all ages. Don’t be surprised if you see some of their team kids out at Hospital crushing your projects in front of you!
