SCC Local Legend: Jonathan Wheeler

For Jonathan Wheeler, climbing started the same way it does for so many of us—with one invitation and a willingness to give it a try.

While visiting King’s Bluff during college with a few friends, Jonathan happened to run into a friend who was already climbing. After borrowing a harness and making it to the top of his first route, he was hooked.

Today, Jonathan gives back to the climbing community that first welcomed him. Whether he’s volunteering at SCC events, documenting our community through his photography, lending a hand on stewardship projects at King’s Bluff, or serving with the Friends of King’s Bluff, Jonathan has become someone who quietly makes a lasting impact.

When asked what climbing areas mean the most to him, he couldn’t pick just one. Foster Falls, Obed, and King’s Bluff all hold a special place in his heart, with King’s Bluff standing out as an area that introduced so many Middle Tennessee climbers to outdoor climbing—including himself.

“The SCC makes sure places like this are kept safe, clean, and given proper trail and route maintenance so that every climber has an epic experience. That impact is why I trust areas like this and know I’ll enjoy my time on lands they manage.”

For Jonathan, climbing has become much more than a hobby. It has shaped the way he approaches challenges, helping him grow physically, mentally, and spiritually.

One of his favorite climbing memories was his first multi-pitch adventure in Diablo Canyon, New Mexico—a trip that reminded him why climbing is as much about the experience and the people as it is the routes.

Jonathan is a familiar face behind the camera and behind the scenes at so many SCC events, helping preserve memories while also preserving the places we climb. His dedication to stewardship, community, and sharing our stories makes him a perfect example of what it means to be an SCC Local Legend.
