Horse Pens 40 is located in northwest Alabama, near the city of Steele and is renowned for its bizarre rock formations with awesome sloping holds and fine sandstone texture. Climbers from around the world have flocked to this small boulder field to sample the brilliant stone. Horse Pens 40 has been described as a cross between “Fontainebleau” and English grit stone which makes for an exceptional bouldering experience. Throw in a high concentration of stellar quality problems all with excellent landings and a mature canopy of hardwood trees and you can understand what all the buzz is about.

What to Expect

Horse Pens 40 boasts 200+ high quality sandstone boulder problems, and has been described as one of the best boulder fields in the world. Fall, winter and early spring are when the slopers are stickiest, so plan your trip accordingly! There is easy access to this amazing boulder field, with a short hike from both the campground and the restaurant. Horse Pens has bathroom facilities (including showers), a restaurant on site and cabin rentals.

Access notes

  • All visitors must sign in at the Country Store
  • Night climbing is permitted Thursday-Sunday night until midnight
  • No dogs
  • All fires must be in designated fire rings
  • Leave No Trace: Keep this area beautiful and clean. Lead by example and pick it up on the first pass.
  • Do not move rocks or remove vegetation for any reason
