Brian and Shoshana Wulf

Climbing communities are built by the climbers who show up, build friendships, care for the places they climb, and find ways to give back to the community.

Brian and Shoshana Wulf demonstrate these values through their approach to climbing and involvement in the community. After finishing music school, the two began climbing through the gym, finding in the sport a way to connect with nature, stay active, and build and maintain friendships.

For them, climbing is a way to connect with nature and with other people:

“It’s our way to connect with nature, make and maintain friendships, and exercise.”

Brian and Shoshana’s favorite Southeastern climbing area is the Obed, which is owned by the National Park Service. Their experience climbing in places like the Obed has given them a greater appreciation for the work that goes into maintaining climbing areas.

“The SCC has helped us learn to appreciate climbing areas more through events like Trail Daze because we’ve experienced what goes into maintaining our climbing areas.”

That appreciation has translated into action. Brian now serves on the SCC Fixed Hardware Committee, contributing to the behind-the-scenes work that is essential to the safety, enjoyment, and conservation of our climbing areas.

Outside of climbing, Shoshana also works as a music teacher and was honored by the CMA Foundation as a Music Teachers of Excellence award recipient in 2024.

Shoshana points to Slabolisius as her favorite climb, while Brian has a couple of favorites of his own, including Something’s Always Wrong and Addiction to Friction.

Brian and Shoshana are SCC Local Legends because they show that the sport is at its best when people don’t just enjoy these places but invest in them. Their involvement reflects the kind of community participation and stewardship that the SCC works to foster throughout the Southeast.
