Rock Town Trail Day Write Up
Posted on Tuesday, July 06 @ 22:27:00 EDT by eepirate
On June 19th, 24 volunteers spent 3 hours in the summer heat spreading gravel at the trailhead at Rock Town. The gravel was WICKED heavy!! It took four volunteers at a time to carry it up the trail in tarps. Everyone worked really hard and it was very hot. We were able to move about 1/10th of the pile, which seemed to never go down. We covered the trail from the beginning to the little foot bridge and then took care of some of the water steps on the first big incline. Carol Simmon's friend, Jeff, cleared away dead trees from the trail with a chainsaw.Click for larger image

Everyone got a prize in the raffle which was really cool! A very special thank you goes to P.M.I. for donating a climbing rope. Since Pigeon Mountain Industries is named after the mountain range where Rock Town resides it was an especially fitting donation.

Adrenaline Climbing supported the local economy by providing a delicious lunch from Choo-Choo BBQ in LaFayette. As we were finishing up lunch, a huge band of thunderstorms came through and we got soaked. Oh well, no bouldering that day. (sigh)

The SCC donated the gravel for this project, and the volunteers worked their sweaty selves to exhaustion. However, there is still a huge pile of gravel to be hauled and spread down the road. It would be awesome if the gravel could be spread little-by-little over the next few months. So, if you're reading this post, the next time you head up there please bring a tarp and a friend or three, and keep the project going! Donate just a half-hour of your time to shore up our access to Rock Town. Thank you!

    - Trey Johanson-Smith

Note: Special thanks goes to Carole Simmons and Adrenaline Climbing for organizing this TeamWorks/Access Fund trail day, to Chuck Weber for procuring the rope from PMI, to Ranger Tim Gilbreath for his cooperation with climbers up on Crockford-Pigeon Mountain, and to the SCC for donating the gravel and other raffle prizes.
