Trail Day Shows Climber Support of Sunset Park!
Posted on Tuesday, June 22 @ 22:22:09 EDT by eepirate
Once again this year, SCC volunteers along with some non-climber locals gave back to Sunset in a very appreciable way! Our continued efforts speak volumes to what a focused group of individuals can accomplish and we certainly continue to impress the NPS and other park users alike.Click for larger image

35 volunteers showed up willing to get dirty, sweaty, and blistered in order to help reclaim a quarter mile of the Bluff Trail on the South end of the park between Black Magic and Celebrity Flake. This included two of the more treacherous sections of trail with very serious drop offs along the outer edge of the trail. "Reclaim" means that we simply restored the trail to the original 3-4 foot width as much as possible by removing overgrowth and sediment that naturally builds up over the years on the uphill side of the trail and slowly forces the trail closer and closer to the edge of the drop offs.

Stone step improvements were also made by folks from the Atlanta Climbing Club on the Treasure Chest access trail.

All was going flawlessly until about 12:30... while everyone was chilling in the parking lot, rehydrating, anxious to see what prizes they'd be taking home from the give-away and ready for their Mojo Burrito and chips - the skies decided to open up and dump enough water that you could've kayaked down the main trail. Quick on his feet, Luis hollered for everyone to meet at TBA for lunch and the drawing.

At TBA, everyone was able to ring out their soaked clothes and dry off a bit, boulder if they liked, chow down on some tasty Mojo burritos and chips (compliments of SCC), and walk away with assorted prizes from Rock/Creek, Marmot, PMI, BD, and SCC.

TBA, Atlanta Climbing Club, and the Adrenaline Team all showed strong support for this event, along with an assortment of climbers (both local and from as far away as Clemson).

Special thanks to everyone below for giving up this half day of otherwise good climbing weather (before the flood) and making this Trail Day a big success!
