Triple Crown makes $3,000 donation The Land Trust for Tennessee
Posted on Friday, March 26 @ 11:43:11 EDT by bradmc
On Friday, February 19th, The Triple Crown donated $3,000 to The Land Trust for Tennessee. This donation supported the purchase of a 3,700 acre property in TN (with numerous climbing crags and boulderfields); the area will become part of the Cumberland Trail State Scenic Trail. Triple Crown has made several donations over the past two years to the Friends of the Cumberland Trail; a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and protection of the environmental, cultural, and historical resources, of the Cumberland Trail State Scenic Trail corridor. www.friendsofthecumberlandtrail.org Click for larger image
John Dorough and Andy Wright (CT ranger) and John Evans (UT botanist) meet at the crag.

As it relates directly to rock climbing, the Cumberland Trail System is home to many southeastern crags and boulderfields including (but not limited to) Laurel/Snow, Buzzard Point, Suck Creek Crags, Devil’s Race Track, and the Obed River.

The state has been working with a small group of Chattanooga climbers over the past several years to develop a management plan for new climbing resources located along the trail. The newly acquired property has several areas (bouldering and crags) that could be excellent resources for the climbing community.

The state is working closely with a small group of climbers, hikers, and trail runners to evaluate the new property’s resources and to identify best locations for trails and trailheads. More information to come as this project continues to develop.

**Total donations from the Triple Crown 2009 event--$26,300

WHAT IS THE TRIPLE CROWN? The goal of the Triple Crown is twofold. First and foremost, the mission is to raise funds for two organizations dedicated to maintaining climbers' access: the Southeastern Climbers' Coalition and The Carolina Climbers' Coalition. These two organizations have been instrumental in the acquisition of land for the climbing community, in a region that is riddled with access issues. Secondly, this unique event will once again provide a tremendous opportunity for vendors to promote the sport of bouldering, which has quickly become the focus of the ever growing climbing community.

Note: Thanks to the Triple Crown for their continued financial support of climbing around the SE (Rumbling Bald, Jamestown, Boat Rock, Laurel Knob, Steele, Stone Fort).
