Urban Core Belay-a-thon raises funds for climbing team
Posted on Saturday, January 30 @ 17:31:30 EST by bradmc
There was tons of energy and excitement as we walked into the Wall Crawlers gym this drizzly and cold Saturday. The 7th Annual Belay-a-thon put on by Urban Core climbing team - was in high gear as forty dedicated youth climbers from the Atlanta community hosted a fund raiser for their team. All proceeds went to help fund their upcoming summer camp and to help Haitian earthquake victims which sounded like a great cause to jump in and check out. Click for larger image

    Belay-a-Thon 2010

The Urban Core Climbing Team was hard at work belaying for a small fee to raise money for their summer camp scholarships for deserving youth, and team scholarships for talented youth climbers in our area. Also, the team members have decided to split the fundraised proceeds with UNICEF for Haitian Earthquake Victims.

The gym was absolutely packed with climbers and they even had a DJ belting out old skool disco thumping sounds from the back corner. Several of the parents were manning a long table filled with baked goodies to raise additional funds. Our kids just had to get over their and scope out the 2 treats for a $1.00.

Lots was going on as many climbers got belayed and a full tilt raffle was under way. Over in the corner it looked like a pullup contest was underway but we were not sure the rules but joined in any way.

Thanks to Emily Taylor with Urban Core gym and her hard work in getting this event up and running and for her dedication to the youth climbing team which has worked so hard to help Boat Rock in the Access Fund's TeamWorks program. A big congratulations to Urban Core for winning Third place nationally in the TeamWorks project.

Note: Special thanks to Urban Core for all of their help with TeamWorks and Boat Rock and for raising funds at the Belay-a-thon to help kids learn more about climbing!
